Observation on Teachers

Our cooperating teacher is Ma'am Maya Rosalia. She's a Science teacher in SMP Negeri 11 Kota Jambi. She handles grade 8, Class 8J and Class 8K. She's a kind teacher and she really love her students. She gave us advice about teaching and helped us in making our lesson plan, and helped us develop our skills in teaching. She's one of the reason why I enjoyed my stay in Jambi, Indonesia.

Planning for Teaching

Ma'am Maya prepared her lesson plan before she teaches to the class. She knows what the needs of her students and she choose the best teaching method so her students can learn and understand the topic really well. Lesson plan is the guide of the teacher and it helps the teacher to impart the knowledge to the students.  The goal in planning the lesson is to have a smooth delivering of the lesson.

Preparing Lesson and Materials

Ma'am Maya prepared her lesson and materials on her own. She also uses a textbook as a guide and bring some real object to explain the topic to her students. Her topic was about pressure and she prepared real life situation to explain the implication of pressure in our daily activities. Power point presentation, pictures, and video presentations were also prepared by the teacher.

Teaching in Class

Ma'am Maya always start her class with a motivation and a review about the last topic being discussed. She used scientific approach and used different method n teaching. First, she discussed the topic and gave some example to be understand by the students. She also picked a student to solve some problem in the board, she also used oral participation and group activity. She also connects the topic in our daily activities to make sure the students can apply what they learned in the school to their own lives.

Measurement and Evaluation

Ma'am Maya gave assessment to her students after the discussion to assessed the learning of the students. Sometimes it was a form of quiz, question and answer, oral quiz and group activity. Sometimes it was a form of a game where the student enjoys having an evaluation. It was quite unique and it was really effective strategy because I saw the students enjoying themselves while learning.

Teaching Practice

Procedure in Teaching

In actual teaching I've always started with a prayer and motivation in order to boost the interest of the students. After the motivation, I discussed the topic to the students and gave some examples with the used of power point presentation. I also played some videos about the topic so that it will give more knowledge to the students. I also asked some question to let them participate in the class and to have an interaction between the teacher and students. After the discussion, I gave group activity so that the students can interact with each other and they can share their ideas to their classmates. Then, I asked some question about the topic to review what I've discussed. Lastly, I gave an assessment to assess the learning of my students.

Time Management and Organizing Activities

Science subject has a different time and class every day. Monday, they don't have a science class. Class 8K scheduled for science was in Tuesday and Friday and Class 8J scheduled for science was in Wednesday and Thursday. The Science class per meeting was about 2 hours every Tuesday and Wednesday and about 3 hours every Thursday and Friday.  

In the class I've managed the time when I'm doing my lesson plan. In Learning activities, Preliminary Area where the prayer, motivation, and checking of attendance were involved last for 15 minutes. In Core Area where the lesson proper was involved last for 50 - 60 minutes. Lastly in Closing Area where the assessment, review and assignment were involved it last 15 -20 minutes.

Problem-Solving

First problem I've encountered is that the book they used was in Bahasa. I always translated what's in the book to English for me to understand the content. It was time consuming to translate what's inside of the book. So, I decide to have my references in the internet. Second is when I'm teaching some of the students  can't cope up with the discussion because of the language I've used. So, when I'm making my presentations, I always translate some words to Bahasa for them to understand and especially when I asked some question. 

Classroom Management

So far the Class 8J students were so active in participating the class. They were always listened to me when I was discussing the topic in the class. Some of the students need a little push in order to participate in the class but most of them were really interested to learn and they were very intelligent.  I'm not having a difficulty when it comes to classroom management because the students were really disciplined and  they were always followed my instructions. They were also nice to me and to the other exchange student-teacher participants.
